I am grateful to pause and celebrate the freeing of these waters and the many ways the planet will benefit from traditional ecological knowledge and co-management with Indigenous people.
Tribes celebrate end of Klamath dam removal, largest in US history, 10/2/24. The largest dam removal project in U.S. history was completed Wednesday, marking a major victory for tribes in the region who fought for decades to free hundreds of miles of the Klamath River near the California-Oregon border.
The U.S. gets a new national marine sanctuary, the first led by a tribe, 10/14/24. More than 4,500 square miles of ocean will soon be protected by the federal government off the Central California coast. The sanctuary is also the first to be led by Indigenous people. It was nominated by members of the Northern Chumash Tribe, who drove the effort for more than a decade to protect the rugged coastline that is their historical homeland.
